Our first event of 2020 with multiple courses in rotation tees off tomorrow in California, as 153 players will tee it up across three courses between Thursday and Saturday, before a 54-hole cut narrows the field down for the final round. The only course players will play twice (everyone plays it in the final round) is the Stadium Course at PGA West. The other two tracks in rotation this year are PGA West’s Nicklaus Tournament Course and La Quinta CC.
Phil Mickelson will serve as both participant and tournament host, while his charity (The Mickelson Foundation) will be the host organization. We will also see a plethora of celebs teeing it up this week as well, with this event being a pro-am. The format for that is two amateurs with two pros in a foursome. The Am’s will switch playing partners and courses for each of the first three days before a final round reshuffle.
Historically we have seen low scores winning this thing, with three separate players shooting a 59 in tournament play, and unless the wind gets to gale force this week should be no exception. Due to that I’ve factored in Strokes Gained: Approach, Birdies or Better Gained, Strokes Gained: Ballstriking and Strokes Gained: Par 5’s as my main stat categories this week.
So without further adieu, my top five for the week are as follows:
1 – Sungjae Im
2 – Kevin Kisner
3 – Vaughn Taylor
4 – Harris English
5 – Brian Harman
And my match-ups:
Brian Harman vs Phil Mickelson
Sungjae Im vs Tony Finau
Bud Cauley vs Nate Lashley
Harris English vs Lucas Glover
And for a deeper look into how I came to those picks or to do your own research, here is this weeks spreadsheet:
