The big dogs are ready to tee it up in California this week (including Tiger Woods) for the first “marquee” event of the 2020 calendar year, and the beginning of quite a good stretch of golf in the coming weeks.
Most golf fans will remember the Farmers Insurance Open as the event Tiger has made his season debut in every (healthy) year since 2006. An oasis of sorts for Tiger, he has won on host course Torrey Pines eight(!) times as a professional; most notably on one leg in the 2008 US Open. That took place on Torrey’s South Course, which of course will be in play this week, as will its counterpart the aptly named North Course. The South is the tougher of the two and will be host to both weekend rounds, while both courses split the opening 36 holes.
Notables in the field other than Eldrick this week include Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, Jason Day and Jordan Spieth (to name a few). Rory is the betting favourite at 6/1, with Rahm (8/1) and Tiger (10/1) rounding out the top-three.
Coming off another undefeated week in matchups we are in search of our second outright winning pick of 2020 and this seems like a great week to get it. After putting all the numbers into my formula, my five outright picks this week are:
- Jon Rahm (8/1)
- Hideki Matsuyama (16/1)
- Justin Rose (14/1)
- Harris English (80/1)

And my head-to-head matchups are:
Lanto Griffin vs Cameron Champ
Keegan Bradley vs Phil Mickelson
Bud Cauley vs Matthew Wolff
My-Five: 10th, 21st, 43rd, 48th, MC
Season Records (Three Events/15 Picks)
